I asked you not to knock upon my door… By David Spelling

I asked you not to knock upon my door
And in the dark of night
Under the faint new moon
I lay awake waiting for your footsteps.
I knew that you heeded not such requests.
And then (so sure I heard you) I paused
And listened closer.
Oh, what calamity in the silence.
